THE BAY BRIDGE...
UNDER DEMOLITION!
The new Bay Bridge was open to the transit beginning of September 2013.
But that.... you already knew!
Since the, we have been wondering about different things, including...
What is going to happen to our great pal, old Bay Bridge?
And...we are really glad that a pedestrian and bike path has been opened, but still it does not go all its way to Treasure Island. Is it going to ever happen?
Below are some answers we could find...
We thought we were going to recommend you to hurry and take pictures of the old Bay Bridge because the demolition process actually started. But it took 3 years to build the Bay Bridge (1933-1936) and it will take 3 years to dismantle progressively its Easter Pan. So you have some time to figure out about your time lapse movie!
Regarding the pedestrians and bikes path... it will all depend on the demolition process. A first path opened September 3, 2013 and gave access to the public for the first time ever along the steel giant. For opening hours and access locations, click here.
We went there. And we loved it! It is simply gigantic and majestic. one will feel kind of lucky to witness such a beautiful show. It's true that the proximity of the cars could spoil the moment. But actually, the noise is so regular that it almost creates some kind of silent harmony. We definitely recommend to take a bike. The walk can b pretty long.
By the way... last question! We already mentioned a company that offers original furniture made out of Golden Gate Bridge pieces(www.ggbfurniture.com). We thought that it would be a great idea to do the same with Bay Bridge parts. Actually, there is no such thing planned so far and one would have to deal directly with the contractors in charge of the demolition.
Take a look at some of our Bay Bridge pictures, before-after, in our gallery. Please don't hesitate to send us some of yours (at [email protected]). We would love to share them!
