Silicon Valley Italian Festival in Palo Alto

in

Palo Alto is going to celebrate Italian cinema on January 29, 2017 at JCC. We asked Giulietta to detail the event for us.

Following the success of the first Italian Festival in Silicon Valley in January 2016, Italy will again be honored in January 2017, with the Italian Film Festival, on January 29th at the Palo Alto JCC.

Two films will be screened that emphasize how the Italian cinema of the last years has been able to produce brilliant movies with touching themes.

Mine Vaganti (Loose cannons), by the Italian-Turkish director Özpetek, takes place in a splendid southern Italy, and touches the sensitive theme of homosexuality in small, conservative towns where everyone knows each other and rumors are rife, especially when the target of gossips is a prominent family. The Cantones are a family well known in Lecce, making  pasta for generations. The father decides to announce at a family dinner that he is ready to pass over the company  to his sons, Antonio, who works with him, and Tommaso studying in Rome. The revelations during dinner will shake the certainties of everyone. A touching story that uncovers the difficulties of family relationships when the unspoken comes to light.

MINE VAGANTI (LOOSE CANNONS)

The film is in Italian with  English subtitles.

Il Nome del figlio (An Italian Name) by Francesca Archibugi, is the Italian version revisited of the French film Le Prénom, which is in turn the cinema version of omonimous play. (Btw... Le Prénom is on streaming on Netflix with some other French comedies. > 5-french-comedies-to-watch-on-streaming-on-netflix).

Betta and Sandro meet Paolo, brother of Betta, Lucio, childhood friend, and Simona, the pregnant wife of Paolo. Betta and Sandro’s family name is Pontecorvo, a wealthy and leftist family. Their childhood in a large villa near the sea comes back in flashbacks all along the movie, we see the children Pontecorvo become adults with their friends, the same friends that  a lot of years later are gathered around the table.

Paolo and Simona decide to reveal the name of their future baby. A discussion takes place, inadvertently revealing long buried family secrets...
A brilliant comedy where it is easy to to see oneself reflected through the  complex human relationships and the difficulties of sharing one’s feelings even with the people who are closest to us.
