SFFilm event: Yours Truly at the Castro - Ai Weiwei expected to attend
Ai Weiwei is expected to attend on April 14, 2019 for the screening of the documentary Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly.
Those who were in San Francisco between mid 2014 to mid 2015 necessarily remember the exhibition @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz.
Packed most of the time, Alcatraz happened to be literally invaded day and night. The question was not how to "Escape from Alcatraz" but rather how to acess it! Read our article about the exhibition >> lostinsf.com/large-ai-weiwei-on-alcatraz.
@Large prompted visitors to consider the implications of incarceration and the possibilities of art as an act of conscience. Highly philosophical, symbolic and political. At the time, Ai Weiwei was not authorized to leave China. He developed the artwork for the exhibition from his studio in Beijing.
Since then, things have changed. The 7 installations have left Alcatraz and Ai Weiwei regained the right to travel outside of China.
Les 7 installations were: With Wind, Trace, Refraction, Stay Tuned, Illumination, Blossom, and Yours Truly. This one encouraged visitors to correspond directly and personally with prisoners, whose portraits, for some of them, were displayed in the Trace series. About 90,000 had been sent during the exhibtion in San Francisco. The film follows these postcards around the globe - from Alcatraz Island to Beijing, Washington, D.C., and Cairo.
Ai Weiwei: Yours truly, is a FOR-SITE Foundation production and has been directed by Cheryl Haines, the curator of the exhibition at Alcatraz.
