Public transportation in San Francisco includes:
MUNI (San Francisco Municipal Railway).
This SF city and county system consists of the buses (54 lines), trolley buses (17 lines), light rails (J, K, L, M, N lines), cable cars (3 lines) and one Street Car (F-Market).
The MUNI is connected to other service companies that reach suburban cities around the Bay :
BART, CALTRAIN, AC TRANSIT and SAMTRANS.

MUNI routes can be found as well, which is the best way to go from a place to another using MUNI resources.

In short, MUNI consists in buses, subway and trolleys in the city.
2$ for a ride. It is worth for an hour and a half and you can switch from one to another MUNI mean.
Its main flaw... does not reach North of Golden gate Park areas.

BART Subways San Francisco

BART's website. Planners, routes, schedules and fares.
Unlike MUNI (offering a fixed fare), BART fares are based on the ride distance. Can be quite expensive in the end.
Pros: the parking system and bikes racks. Really helpful and environmental friendly.
CALTRAIN
Here is another train reaching suburbs, starting from ‘’4th/King Street’’ station. Most Caltrain users work or live south Bay and Peninsula until San Jose. Fares are based on the ride distance as well. Caltrain.com
