Open-galleries!

San Francisco, First Thursday of the Month.

Since 1993, on the evening of the first Thursday of every month, the commercial art galleries in Downtown San Francisco open their doors to the public.

As we usually hesitate to enter those fancy venues, that night everything is possible! The casual style is adopted, glasses of wine and crackers are offered, conversations on taste and colors are engaged and everyone is invited to admire the works of the artists.

As many galleries have their main door directly accessible from the street, a group of galleries located on 49 Geary Street is more difficult to find. At first sight, a hotel reception and an impersonal hall. But use the elevators to discover many floors of art galleries open to the public.
One of its most renowned galleries, Fraenkel Gallery, is specialized in photography.

Many other hidden galleries participate in "First Thursday Art" like the ones on 251 Post Street, an  address you should remember if you are a contemporary art fan. 77 Geary street is another one. Even though it was recently turned into a TechSpace (to offer place to local start ups), there is still the Adler & Co Gallery over there.

Every month, new artists and new exhibitions are presented. Simply take a look at the participating galleries to figure out your path.

Of course a few hours on Thursday night isn't enough to explore all the galleries. That's why this great event is scheduled every first Thursday of the month!
