Mammoth Discovery!

in

Children's Discovery Museum, San Jose.

The small but very nice Children’s Discovery Museum opens a new exhibit on a mammoth whose skull and bones were discovered by chance in the neighborhood.

Everything started in the summer of 2005, when a scientist walking his dog along the Guadalupe River near the San Jose airport discovered the skull of a Columbian mammoth. Paleontologists from UC Berkeley's Museum of Paleontology came down to conduct the excavation, and also discovered a thigh bone and the pelvis of this juvenile mammoth, now called Lupe, after the river along which she was discovered, and who would have roamed the valley about 14,000 years ago.

The exhibit “Mammoth Discovery!” features Lupe's actual skull, femur, and pelvis fossils, a full size replica of Lupe inside, a model of a fully grown mammoth outside, and 20 other fun and interesting hands-on exhibits on fossils, the Ice Age, archeological excavations...
