Frantz, the latest movie by French director François Ozon, opens in San Francisco and the Bay Area on March 24, 2017.

Once again, François Ozon offers us a real masterpiece where no detail is neglected. Actors performances are outstanding : Pierre Niney is no longer Yves Saint Laurent and the young German actress is absolutely stunning, strong and delicate, clever and with an ability to share genuine emotions.

The movie is in black and white with some colored parts as an art effect. Everything is subtle and the lesson is immense, showing us these 2 countries healing from the war disaster, with people trying to survive and to live again, while others dive into anger and bitterness. Considering the times we are experiencing now, that is definitely a good lesson to listen to.

And don't think that it is a naive and simple love story. It is for sure about love, but it comes in different ways. Parents' overwhelming love, friends love and in the end a real eagerness to live that sounds like hope.

The story briefly...

A haunting tale of love and reconciliation begins in a small town in Germany in the immediate aftermath of World War I when a young woman mourning the death of her fiancé encounters a mysterious Frenchman laying flowers on her beloved’s grave.

Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, (1914-1918), FRANTZ recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war¹s lost generation: Anna, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed during trench warfare, and Adrien, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town, placing flowers on Frantz¹s grave. Adrien's presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany's defeat, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz, conjured up in evocative flashbacks.

What follows is a surprising exploration of how Ozon's characters' wrestle with their conflicting feelings - survivor¹s guilt, anger at one¹s losses, the overriding desire for happiness despite everything that has come before, and the longing for sexual, romantic and familial attachments.
