5 monumental illuminated rabbits invade Civic Center Plaza for 3 weeks.
This gigantic exhibition, Intrude, gathers 5 huge rabbits that settled down in front of the City Hall until April 25.
Pretty often, the Civic Center Plaza turns itself into exceptional outdoor public art exhibitions. In 2015, it hosted the Fancy Animal Carnival, and its farandole of colorful, imaginary creatures.
The gigantic inflated Rabbits of Intrude, by the Australian artist Amanda Parer, are touring the US after having already invaded temporarily some great European cities like London, Istanbul or Paris. They will soon reach New York, then Houston, Los Angeles and Denver.
Rabbits in artist Amanda Parer's native Australia are an out of control pest, leaving a trail of ecological destruction wherever they go and defying attempts at eradication. First introduced by white settlers in 1788 they have caused a great imbalance to the countries endemic species. The rabbit also is an animal of contradiction.
They represent the fairytale animals from our childhood – a furry innocence, frolicking through idyllic fields. Intrude deliberately evokes this cutesy image, and a strong visual humour, to lure you into the artwork only to reveal the more serious environmental messages in the work. They are huge, the size referencing “the elephant in the room”, the problem, like our environmental impact, big but easily ignored.
They look so cute at the first sight, and then, there is like an awkward feeling, they are not really theatening you but create like a discomfort. Watch out, Big Rabbit is watching!
Intrude at the City Center Plaza is the result of the collaboration between the SFAC (San Francisco Arts Commission) eand the Recreation & Parks Department.
Exhibition is free and open to the public until April 25, 2016, day and night! During the day, the blue sky and sun of San Francisco kinf of naturally enlighten these intrusive white characters. At night, they will glow thanks to the led lights inside their bodies.
